one of the things i liked about the original recording is how incredibly Obtrusive it is. sometimes i would listen to it when i was feeling really anxious just because it's so exhausting to listen to in places that i couldn't think about much of anything else. so it's interesting to listen to a version that feels a little more subdued.

i have been trying to wake up angry high school xyzzy again by listening to a lot of punk music.

my high school was extremely conservative christian. it was also single-sex. we got lectured on being good christian housewives on the reg. they were anti-feminist, anti-contraception, anti-cohabitation, anti-homosexuality, anti-basically anything that wasn't stayin' home and havin' babies. it was infuriating. and i was angry. so angry. i listened to a lot of punk and just... let it flow through me.

but i kind of burned myself out on it, i think. i haven't been nearly so angry since i got out of there. i also haven't listened to nearly as much punk even though i still love it.

talking about high school invokes something of a trauma response in me even now like ten years later. i get all tight-feeling and stressed out.

you know who my high school probably fucking loved? mike pence.

not long after trump got elected i had something of a panic attack in my bathroom. "the people who ran my high school with are in charge of the country," i remember texting a friend frantically. "how am i going to survive this?"

i'm still not sure how i'm going to survive this. so i'm trying to get that anger back. because honestly i think i drew strength from it.
